I understand either Don Helms or Charlie Byrd played on Hank Williams tunes. I am learning these tunes and wanted to know who plays on what. Thanks in advance! - Drew

Lovesick Blues
Never Get Out of This World Alive
If You’ve Got The Money Honey
Baby We’re Really In Love
Long Gone Daddy
I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You
Won’t Be Home No More

I didn't know that Jazz Guitar Player Charlie Byrd ever played with ol' Hank - maybe you mean Jerry Byrd?

Here's the info:

Lovesick Blues (Jerry Byrd)
Never Get Out of This World Alive (Don Helms)
If You’ve Got The Money Honey
Baby We’re Really In Love (Don Helms)
Long Gone Daddy (Jerry Byrd)
I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You (Don Helms)
Won’t Be Home No More (Don Helms)
Wear Out Your Walkin’ Shoes
Why Don’t You Love Me (Don Helms)
Settin’ The Woods On Fire (Don Helms)

I think Hank never recorded "Wearin' Out Your Walkin' Shoes" and "If You've Got The Money" (which was a hit for Lefty Frizzell, Jimmy Curtis played Steel on the original recording from 1950).

Kind Regards, Walter

DOH!! Jerry Byrd of course, thanks for the correction, Walter.

Charlie Byrd was an awesome guitarist, I think he passed away recently.

Walter,

You're right about Lefty. Thanks for matching the players and songs. You really know your stuff!

Drew,

Don Helms is probably mostly remembered as HW's steel player. However before Don came on board, HW used several steel players including Don Davis. But the greatest was Jerry Byrd.

In the following thread, I listed all tunes that Jerry recorded with Hank. I stated and believe that "Moanin' the Blues" was the first song HW used Don Helms. Also, if I am not mistaken, even after Hank hired Don, he made a recording or two with Jerry before turning the job completely over to Don.
