Hi Guys

Can the Carter rods be shortened and re-threaded? I know my P/P rods were machined and not done on a normal die. The Carter rods look similiar as the threaded part OD looks bigger than the rod itself. Also might be looking for a set of shorter rods if anyone happens to have some.

thx

Bob

Jeff

I can cut and rethread mine *if* it can be done with a standard die. Hopefully John Fabian can answer.

thx

Bob, the rods are 5/32" in dia. the 10-32 thread is rolled on. You will not be able to re-thread them if you cut off the threads. I'd suggest that you work on the other end. You can bend a new hook on the end by heating it red hot, with a propane torch, then bending with vise grips. Shape it like the originals by grinding the extra part off. Clean up the darkened area, where it was heated, with fine emery cloth or steel wool. I've done this and it worked out well. Good luck.

I do believe Bill is correct. You can always tell by checking whether the threads are larger in diameter than the rod. If they are, they are rolled on and cannot be threaded with the same diameter thread using a die.

If the diameter of the thread is equal to the rod, then you can rethread them. Probably the main reason for rolling threads instead of threading them with a die, is it so much faster. And I believe less expensive to the manufacturer.

I have successfully re-threaded the Carter rods with a die. It can be done.

By the way Bob, I was talking to John Fabian after I did this, and he recommended cutting the rod at the hook end and re-bending the hook.

Richard

Did it work but the threads were on the "thin" side? Let's get our Carters together to meet

I'm going to pick up a piece of scrap 5/32 rod and try to cut some 10/32 threads and see what happens. Thanks, guys.

If you haven't yet done so and I were you, I would call the fine folks at Carter first.

The threads work just fine. I did use new nylon tuning nuts though so the threads could cut there own threads in the nut.

We definately need to get together.

Sounds cool, Richard

Just to be clear, I'm talking the rods that connect the *floor pedals* to the cross rods, right?

Me thinks you folks are talking about two different rods. There are "changer" pull rods and pedal pull rods. I assumed the author was talking about the pedal rods. But now that I have reread the thread I am not sure.

The changer pull rods are easily threaded. The "stamped" pedal rods are another story. While one might be able to use a die on these, it would not be an appropriate diameter thread. The reason for this is the diameter of the thread on a stamped rod is larger than the rod.

If you have a stamped pedal rod and you wish to shorten it, 'tis best, as has been said, if you shorten the "hook" end and rebend and grind it using the cut off end as a guide.

Right! There are "pull rods" and "pedal rods", but there are no "pedal pull" rods.

We got it now!
