The pots were made by Stackpole in the 45th week of 1956. So the earliest Fender could have bought them would Nov-Dec 1956. Based on that, I think you could safely say the guitar is a 1957. But... Fender often bought huge supplies of pots and used them in guitars for a couple of years. My 1968 telecaster had original 1966 pots. Another thing to keep in mind... the pencil date on the body indicates the date that the Body was finished, not the completion date of the guitar. I had an old Fender with a pencil date of 1952, pots dated 1953, and a signed quality control tag inside dated 1953. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

I'll say '59, based on the case and assuming it is original to the guitar. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

Stringmasters and Telecasters shared the same knobs and the knurling pattern on them can sometimes be helpful in dating if they are original.
A rounded dome and fine knurling was used in the mid 50's but may have already been replaced by a flatter dome and more course knurl pattern in '57 and unfortunately there was no difference in '57 & '58 thatI can remember.
You could try a blacklight to see if there is a pencil date hiding in the tuner pan area that can't be seen with the naked eye. The big picture though is that it doesn't really matter, its a great piece. _________________ Time flies like an eagle

You might be on to something with 1959. I think they stopped pencil dates for a while on 1959 as someone complained about a rude message or something written in a Telecaster an so they told everyone to stop writing anything. I guess this would have applied to syeels too. |
