Topic: That "Lefty Frizzell" Lick |

The first two songs my new group threw at me have it (I believe played by Curley Chalker)--Always Late, and Onie's Bop. I can get close, but still struggle a bit to hear it--I do "Late" on my A6 neck--start somewhere around the IV chord (D-ish), go up to about the V chord (E-ish)--then slide up sharp of the 12th fret A by about 1/2 step, and then resolve to the A. Each time I listen it sounds different--sometimes I hear the opening part as a whole step starting at D, and other times about a half step starting at Eb. I find that if I shake it enough it sounds better i.e. not precise chord intonation. I haven't tried slowing it down yet. Has anyone grasped the lick (the one at the intro, and throughout the song)that could offer suggestions? Thanks

Dana, my take on that lick (also in A6 tuning) from 5th fret
- a quick finger roll over the 5,6,Root strings at 5th - slide to 6th - 8th - 13th - back to 12th. Sounds right to me.? Such a fun tune to play!

Thanks David--Yeah, I've played with in that ballpark too. Again, to my ear it sounds a little better if it's not played with too much precision--the other fill licks are like that too--lots of bar shaking etc  . Talk about fun--we're doing Onie's Bop--have you all heard it? The steel player gets to do some imitating of different players:

Chalker played it on the Frizzell cuts, but it was a Joaquin Murphey lick from his recording of "Steel Guitar Jubilee."
I'm certain of it, because I believe Murph would never have copied another steel player, except maybe Sol Hoopii, Dick McIntyre, Noel Boggs, or Tommy Sargent.

Cool thread, guys. Onie's Bop is cool and one I hadn't heard before. But I've always dug that lick in the Lefty song.
And definitely cool insight on its origin, Herb.

Thanks for that tip, Herb. I couldn't find the Murphey recording of Steel Guitar Jubilee (Feb 51) unfortunately but I did find this one of Roy Lunn with Faron Young. Praguefrank reckons that this transcription was early 1950s which makes it an early cover of Murphey.
