Looking around on YouTube there is not a lot featuring the National D8 steel guitar and I started to wonder if it was considered to me more of a toy given its bright 50,s decor. Could a nice tone be coaxed out of this instrument? This is my attempt to see if I could. Played through a Roland Cube 80.

Mick, you captured the "feeling and expression" of that beautiful song perfectly. The National sounds great too. I have played a few in the past and they always satisfied big time.

Thank you both for your comments. I think I have found the right amp settings to bring out the tone in this guitar at last compared to earlier recordings.
That brings me to another point and I apologise if this has been discussed before. Which gives the best response - a knife edge bridge or a large diameter bar?
The bridge on my Gretsch is a solid lump of steel and sounds really good. I tried swapping it for a Gibson style bridge and lost the sustain so put the big bridge back on.
Perhaps this is something that you could answer George as I see that a lot of your guitars appear to have gone towards knife edge compared to the earlier brass rod. I do own one of your guitars made from a solid lump of Maple, number 2 of 3 made.

Hello Mick,
On my older models with the 3/8" Brass Roller Pin, I was going for a more mellow Hawaiian Tone and was looking to transfer energy through the wood bridge tray-string receiver.
A 1/2" Brass Round bar works great and we call ours Sustain Monsters.
My Knife Edge Design in my little R&D confirmed Opinion
Transfers sonic energy down into a 1/2 X 1/2 inch block of 360 brass making a huge foot print to the body wood.
This results in super long sustain and a more Modern Electric Sound that is popular in today's world.
I swear by the Con Cave Design as a most Smooth, Highest Gain, Sonic-ly speaking.
