Larry Sasser and I were talking the other day and he would like to get this information out to the steel guitar world, so we wrote up the following:
From Larry Sasser
“I thought I would share the following with you in case you are visiting Nashville in the near future.
The Country Music Hall of Fame has an exposition going now in Nashville, TN, called Dylan, Cash & the Nashville Cats: A New Music City.
This group of musicians are some of top session players from over the years. They all came from widely varying backgrounds. They were musicians immersed in the life and possessing a love for great music, no matter the genre. Every day they had a wide diverse recording scenarios, possibly: Mitch Miller at 10:00 am, Conway Twitty at 2:00 pm and Joan Baez at 5:00 pm. They were all incredibly quick studies, creative players who impressed an increasingly broad spectrum of artist. Steel guitar player Pete Finney and the American Federation of Musicians # 257, Nashville Office, worked with the Country Music Hall of Fame to put this together.
They attracted a lot of pop & rock artists to Nashville to record, carrying over into the country music.
People like Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstat, The Pointer Sisters and many others were involved in the widening of the scope of the Nashville record session scene.
This expo shows many of the instruments and memorabilia from session players and artists and tells the history of how this change in the Nashville recording scene came about.
One item that is on display (for us steel guitar lovers) is the Sunburst Green & Gold Fingertip Sho-Bud that Lloyd Green used for so many sessions. This steel is also on several album covers by Lloyd.
Larry Sasser played this steel on his very first Nashville session around 1969.
Another steel that might be on display is Pete Drakes original Sho-Bud that was built in Madison, TN. Photos that you have seen show this guitar, with Pete’s name on the front, embossed in a leather pad mounted to the face of the steel. Here is the catch to this plaque. This Sho-Bud originally belonged to Buddy Emmons and he sold it to Pete Drake. Buddy used to say “I sold that guitar in a weak momentâ€. Buddy’s name was inlaid in pearl on the front of the steel and Shot Jackson made the plaque for Pete and therefore Pete’s name over Buddy’s. They both played this guitar on many records.
Some of The Nashville Cats are:
PETE DRAKE: steel guitar
NORBERT PUTNAM: bass
WAYNE MOSS: electric guitar
LLOYD GREEN: steel guitar
PIG ROBBINS: piano
BEN KEITH: steel guitar
CHARLIE DANIELS: guitar & fiddle
KENNY BUTTREY: drums
GRADY MARTIN: electric guitar
JERRY REED: electric and gut string guitar
FRED CARTER Jr.: guitar
CHARLIE McCOY: most known for his harmonica playing but he was a utility man. He could play a lot of instruments well. Also music director for Hee Haw.
DAVID BRIGGS: piano
MAC GAYDEN: guitar & song writer
WELDON MYRICK: steel guitar
BUDDY SPICHER: fiddle
The Hall of Fame has recorded interviews with several of these guys. Lloyd Green and Weldon Myrck might interest the club members. These interviews can be seen on YouTube.
I just thought that you “real†country music fans might like to know this little bit of history.
If you get the chance, go by the museum.†|

Bill, Your compliments are well deserved. The things you do for the steel world and have done are incredible. You were and are always there to help further the steel world in any way you can. From the sound work you helped Larry with doing his shows back in '90's, to the help you gave at the Choo-Choo shows, to the very things here on this forum, so as they say, "keep on keepin' on, and thanks for all you do!! _________________ If it's a penny for your thoughts!!!

Great exhibit ! Just wanted to acknowledge that the co-curator of this is steel guitarist Pete Finney (as mentioned above) and have to congratulate him on a fantastic job on it. I got to see it earlier this year, and the day after spent the day recording with Lloyd Green and Wayne Moss at Cinderella Sound, all featured in the exhibit. Way to go Pete! _________________ John Macy
