I FINALLY got my copy of "Three Bells," with Rob Ickes, Jerry Douglas, and Mike Auldridge.

Wow. Here's a cut...

https://youtu.be/_qovB5GD2EY

Listen to the way the guys switch parts around, as each one takes a ride. Some beautiful back-up, by all three men. And clearly inspired by Mike Auldridge. The liner notes, say a lot, as well. Get a copy.

It's great. It's even more special, at least, to me, because of Mike's passing before it was released. Knowing just how sick Mike was while making this, when I listen to the first song, "Silver Threads Among The Gold", and the last song, "I'm Using My Bible As A Road Map", and that Mike chose to do those songs in particular, I think it speaks volumes. An incredible CD, amazing playing by all of them.

It's a beautiful and moving record on it's own but even more poignant knowing what Mike was going through at the time. It's also a tour de force of three steel players with perfect intonation, complementing one another perfectly and staying out of one another's way despite all three instruments being in the same relatively narrow range of register.

I had the pleasure of hearing Jerry last weekend and a joy to be sharing a table with Mike's wife, Elise.

As part of the show Jerry played a Mike tribute using Mike's old Regal built s/n 426.

"Mike Auldridge made the Dobro cool and hip! He took it uptown".

The gentleman that he is Jerry presented Elise with Mike's award for the IBMA Recorded Event Of The Year for "Three Bells".

It was a heartwarming evening. (Photos by Brandy Durbin)

Yeah...That's the guitar. Jerry is holding the guitar and says "I want to say goodbye to an old friend..".

Classier than Mike? You decide! Smile

Ah, man/ You guys. You know what a sentimental, cry baby I am. You're making me tear up just thinking about it, and Jerry saying good bye to an old friend, well, dang. Where's my kleenex!

I'm so glad, the last time I saw Mike, I was able to tell him just how special he was to me, and thank him for always encouraging me. He never even had to say a word, just give me that yearly hug. Yep, a class act for sure. 3 Bells, what better way for him to say good bye, and what a wonderful, way for us to remember him.
Jerry, and Rob, class acst to for doing this, and making sure it was released. Can't imagine how hard it must have been for them as well.
Happy Thanksgiving you guys.

I met him at a out door show a long long time ago. I'm a nobody, but he talked to me for some time like I was a family member. I never forgot that time. A class guy for sure. Joe
