I just bought a 1941 Epiphone Electar Century 8 string steel. I haven't received it yet, but I know that it's going to need some work. For one thing, the bridge and nut have been replaced with six string versions, but i plan to have Ryan Rukavina make me the correct parts.
The main thing that I'm wondering about is the pickup. It's the blade type, and I've been told that they're not so great sounding. I have always loved the look of these guitars, and I'm a big Epiphone fan, so I don't mind putting the money in to it to get it sounding and playing well.
Any thoughts on these guitars and pickups?

I have two pre war epi's. a Century and an Electar. the pickups had low output when I first got them. I replaced one with a Jason Lollar Chicago Six and the other was rewound by Lindy Fralin. both steels sound and play great. they will outlive me.

An 8-string pre-war Epi must be kind of rare.....
Nice looking guitar...

Now that this guitar is fully functional, I thought I'd poat a couple of pictures. Ryan Rukavina did a great job rebuilding the pickup, and making a new bridge and nut.

These old Electars, in my experience, need a bit of help. The bridge and nut material used was a very light, cheap type of metal. You did the right thing by replacing them. The pickup, too--pretty much impossible to do anything in the way of repair with those pickups. You definitely made improvements on the instrument. Have fun with it!
