most players who play regularly have dealt with the string breakage problem.
it's an unspoken tradition that one learns to replace the string before the song ends. |

I used to change the string during a song. Unless it's the 5th string, now I just wait until break time. I can get by with any other string breaking, but not string 5. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I like the fact that he doesn't bar at all during the string change lead... _________________ John Brabant

I agree with Richard - if #5 breaks I'm dead in the water so I may as well stop playing and put on a new one. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

why is that?
i can change any. the most difficult would be the c6 10th string cause it's such an ugly fat thing. |

Easy on a Kline! Any string. And if you use a string stretcher, you good to go Maybe someone should make pre-stretched strings? _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

I agree with Richard and Roger. I usually lose a 3rd string doing fills. I start right away - no fills while the singer sings and lead guitar and/or fiddle handle fills and a solo; then I'm right back. _________________ Jack Aldrich

I have no problem changing the string during a song. My problem is I can't tell when the string is close to it's pitch so I can get the tuner and tune it up. I have had strings break just getting them to where I think they should be. It's usually not cool to play the string through your amp at a level that the band or crowd can hear. And most bands I have played with over the last 10 years or so, don't seem to want to shut up during a break so I can get the string close to where I can use my tuner. I may just put the string on and try to get it up during breaks when I can.
The Kline almost never broke strings. but they are real fast to change. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . It hasn't happened often but if a string breaks, just change it !
For me it's really more of where are we in the song,I don't rush though, It's probably a 2 min ordeal.
fact of the matter is I change 3 and 5 fairly often ( together at the same time ) so I have not had any breakage on a gig in a very long time, maybe years.
I'm odd guy out, I don't go for the worlds record on how long the 3rd string lasts. I do know this.. "It Doesn't Last Forever" ! And next gig could easily be when the "not forever" thing arrives !
Just try to make sure that it doesn't happen JUST before your ride on HWY 40 Blues , ask for more time _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Tony,
I did the same thing. When the 3rd string had to be tuned more than 2 or 3 times in a gig, I changed it. _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

I saw Paddy Long change a broken string mid song one night at the Hornby club in Christchurch. It was the slickest thing I have ever seen. It certainly says a lot for having a side kick on your seat. _________________ Carter Universal,Quilter Steelaire combo,

A little preparation goes a long way. I keep a few 3rd strings pre cut to the right length. I can usually get back in the game before a song is over.. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

Years ago, during a show from Robert Randolph's early Family Band tour, I saw Robert change a broken string during a song and get it up to pitch, while keeping a high energy vocal going the whole time. I have to say I was impressed! |
