I picked up a 54 Fender Custom Triple 8 last night. I has been stored most of it's life. It has no strings on it. I play pedal steel and 6 string guitar. I'm curious on what tunings to put on this. It would seem logical to put something on it I'm familiar with, for sure C6th, and possibly some form of E tuning but that's about all I can think of. Looking for any ideas. Also, this guitar is completely original. There is some flaking of the chrome plating on the pickups. Is that something I should fix or does that diminish the value of it? I'm interested to know opinions and ideas.
thank you
steve

Just my opinion, but I'd probably go with versatile C6th (my favorite tuning), because by just retuning a few strings you could get B11, Leavitt, etc. on the same neck.

For the other 2 necks, depending on your style of music, I'd go with A6th (like your pedal steel with the A & B pedals down), and probably something like Leon McAuliffe's E13th for the third neck.

Unless the flaking chrome REALLY REALLY aggravates you, I'd probably leave it alone.

Enjoy your new (to you) guitar!

I had a Fender dual 8 (Stringmaster)years ago and I always wanted to set it up as a 16 string... with a basic C6th tuning on one neck and all the cool chord extensions on the other. But there was a serious tonal difference between the 2 necks. Maybe it was just that particular guitar, but it made it impossible to jump between necks in the same song.

Perhaps your instrument will allow you to utilize multiple necks at the same time. Then the sky's the limit with tuning options... Keep the center neck relatively normal, and use the outsides for the weird tunings. (one of the necks probably has fatter slots in the nut for bass strings anyway)
