Anne Murray has made many a fine recording, and "You Needed Me" written by Randy Goodrum must rank as one of her best. The song earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 21st Grammy Awards. This 2015 version was recorded with a steel guitar lead, key of A, played on the Steelocaster, A6 tuning, All the backing was performed by Tony Kiek of Australia.

Paul,

Great video, good to see steel guitar is alive in the UK. I am from the UK too, now living in Southern California. I notice that your recording was made in 2014. I have the following comments to offer, hope they will be of some use:
- great tone, eight-string lap steel, love it
- the structure of the tune is AABAA, so the structure lacks variety from verse to verse, consider more variations in playing style in the A's
- consider opportunities for harmony in addition to the arpeggiation you so skilfully employ. I notice you use three finger picks, so you would have even greater scope for harmony than I do ( I only use two).
- us steel guitar players are often likened in the band to "wallflowers". an occasional face shot in the Youtube video would be welcome!!!

I play this tune using the A6 tuning (lo2hi F# - A - C#- E - F# - A - C# - E) and as the key is A I find moving up the neck on occasion using a harmonising scale to be "natural" and more "legato". However, I do not know much about the tuning you employ, so please forgive me.

Great rendition, and thanks for sharing,

Kay

Thanks Kay - your advice is much appreciated as I haven't been playing lap steel that long.I'm going to try this in A6th now and get those additional harmonies going. The Leavitt tuning is a weird one that's for sure.
