Topic: Flying with a PP |

Can anyone give me some insight on flying with
a D-10 PP? It seems I may have no choice. Any extra safe
packing ideas or advice on this matter would be
greatly appreciated. I am uncomfortable with even the thought
of doing this. I have flown with a Mullen S-10 several times
and not been to worried but this is another matter and I no longer
own the Mullen.

i'd just put it in a good flight case and hope for the best.
the worst that ever happened to me was a small hole got punched in the case. no damage to the steel and the airline gave me what i paid for the case and let me keep the case. i just glued a small formica patch over the hole and it's been fine. |

When I owned a PP, my concern wasn't that a hole would get punched through the case, but that the barrels would jiggle loose from all the vibration of the flight and that I'd be unable to get the guitar properly-adjusted again in time for the gig. Of course, I'm more mechanically inept than your average PSG player, so maybe that's not a concern of yours...

hey Leo I flew back in the 80s and 90s with mine in a good flight case and had no trouble
I would loose the strings down have good foam padding in the case they picked mine up and threw
it up on the pile of everthing else then threw it in the plane hold got there ok still in tune
your milage may vari.......

Check the baggage size and weight limits the airline has posted for your particular flight.
I have found flying with a PP is no different than any other steel.
I don't see any positive reason to loosen the strings. The slight variations in string tension from heat or cold are nothing compared to what happens to string tension when you actually play. If anything loosening the strings could make things rattle around more and cause problems. I have done flights where I my PP was frozen and then I thawed it out with a hairdryer on stage right before the concert. Didn't need to touch the endplate once the temperature settled in.

| put a towel over the underside of the steel then put enough bubble wrap so when you close the case there is some pressure against all the rods and changer etc. Don't put too much cuz then you will push down too hard. This will keep things from vibrating. The towel under the bubble wrap will keep it from popping. |

| There was a steel UPSed from WV to Texas that a pickup was torn out of its mount. Be sure to put something firm between the pickups and the strings. Tight enough hold the pick up snug. The weight of the pick up will rip it from its mount if the case is dropped with the steel laying in the case upside down. Good Luck and a Uneventful Flight. |

Include a page with a picture of the assembled instrument, and a "Dear Inspector, This is a musical instrument (Pedal Steel Guitar), please do not lift it by the rods. Thanks you..." note.
My note is taped to the inside lid of my case.
I would not fly with an irrplaceable instrument.
Bagggage gets lost. My Steel was lost Between Nashville and Chicago once. 
It was located and returned to me three days later. |
