I have been playing 8 string C6 lap steel for awhile and would like to add some dobro bluegrass/gospel sound every now and then. Since I already know the 6th tuning I thought about getting an 8 string dobro in G6. What are the down sides (other than an 8 string is hard to find)? You do loose the simplicity of a simple strum. How big a deal is that? What else am I not thinking about? Any suggestions? Thoughts? [/u]

I just got both albums and they are amazing. Very helpful. Any advice on an 8 or 7 string Dobro? The only one 8 know about is the 8 string Goldtone. Anyone with experience with that? I want to stay under $1,500.

I have the signature 8 string Goldtone that I purchased direct from Beard. When I got it in it sounded BAD BAD. It sounded so bad I bet I did'nt spend 1 hour on it in a years time. (no sustain, no projection of sound). I spoke to Beard about 3 times during the period and was told Because the cone was not designed for the string tension.. and nothing could be done. In frustration I called Beard and told them to put their new cone in it and do whatever it takes to make the guitar playable. When I got the guitar back.. wow.... what a difference...Good sound and sustain and now a playable instrument. Sooooo
if your going with the Goldtone..Make sure they put in the legand cone and make the guitar playable. Hope this helps....Lee

Thanks -- very helpful!
I think ideally I would have someone custom make a 7 string but that sounds expensive -- any suggestions out there?

I've got Shot Jackson's 7 string tuning with an added 6th string on my Goldtone 8 string. It sounds wonderful and you can hear it here:

It's the same as this one:

I'd be more than willing to part with it for a fair price, well below retail. I've had a few real Dopera Brothers 6 string instruments and no way did they have any more volume or better tone than my 8 string.
