I have two 6 string lap steels, and want to set one up for more of a rock setting and the other some sort of "Country"

Thanks in advance
Howard

I guess I would go for (country)
6.C#
5.E
4.G
3.A
2.C
1.E

and (rock)
6.G
5.B
4.D
3.G
2.B
1.D

Lots of options though.

The most common tunings for electric lap steel are C6th:

1. E
2. C
3. A
4. G
5. E
6. C

and either open D or open E (shown below is open D; tune up a whole step for open E):

1. D
2. A
3. F#
4. D
5. A
6. D

For acoustic lap steel, either open D as listed above or open G:

1. D
2. B
3. G
4. D
5. B
6. G

Brad. Maybe we need to make this sticky so it remains on the main page.

Common queries

What tuning to use?
What tone bar or slide etc
What finger picks

That sort of stuff

So there is a permanent sticky for new lap steelers. Who ask the same questions to existing topics.

I don't believe this needs to be a stickied post. There are hundreds of websites out there with similar information.

Searching for what is the most common tuning for lap steel returns 80,000 results as of today.

Users just need to know that a search function exists and can be used to find out what you seek.

agreed!
if you can't remember two simple tunings, you'll probably have trouble with lots of other aspects of playing steel.
