I use a powered PA speaker as part of my main setup. Does anybody know if the Carvin BX700 (the new version of the bx500) can be used as a preamp ONLY with no speaker attached?
It would be nice to have a full featured preamp and eq section, but only be able to use the power amp section as a "Backup."

It looks identical to my BX500, except front panel cover and power.
My BX500 can act as a preamp without any speaker connected. I used mine for a recording session, using the XLR Direct out connection to the recording board. It was on for about 4 hours and no problem. |

I am also looking at the GK MB500, which seems to get a lot of praise here. I'm curious, for anybody who chose the MB500 or Carvin, why did you make the choice you did?
The best I can gather is that the MB500 has a better base tone, but the Carvin has much more extensive EQ.
Is that correct? |

Just got the official word from GK that the MB500 can be used without a load attached, as a preamp only.
The question remains, despite the differences in features, which sounds better? The MB500 or the BX500?

I don't know about the MB500. I had an MB200 which is popular on here before I got the BX500. The BX500 has a 12AX7 tube in it where the MB200 was total solid state. The 12AX7 tube, which operates as a "real" preamp in the BX500 makes a difference.
There are some amps that have a tube in them but they are basically "starved plate" buffers and do not really make a difference. |
