You guys are probably tired of questions about string gauges, but I got these string guages from John Ely and Cindy Cashdollar's web sites, if I recall correctly. Anyway, there is quite a difference in the two gauges, especially in the lower register. I am curious what your thoughts are on these and which way you go. I am thinking of restringing my Fender Deluxe 8 as A6th and wondered which one is more "desireable".
Thanks in advance. (sorry for the poor formatting of the charts) Sad

The second one seems more practical...
I have played A6th steels for over 40 years and used many different gauges. Especially for the wound strings, one gauge can cover a dozen different pitches. Just start with the recommended gauges, and then buy some individual strings or sets and experiment until you like the sound and feel.

I personally always go larger, so the strings don't flex under the weight of the bar. I like the solid feel. When the strings are too light you can push them out of tune when playing normally.

Too heavy may be problematic as well, but as long as they don't break at pitch you should be ok.

The second is closest to what I use.

I use John Ely's chart for all my tunings and have always been happy with the result.

I play short scale (22.5") instruments so choose the heaviest gauge of the three choices for each string.
