Same artist (Roy St John) and maybe a year later...

'Roger Redwing', by the way, was an inside joke on the day.

Enjoyed it, Roger. A fun song and your steel licks
and solos were very nice!

Mr. Redwing: I enjoyed 'The Way You Look Tonight;' I wish all our beginnings could remain so innocent forever, like the song.
But then we get better, and the second one is, and innocence is lost, for the better, I suppose. The sound of the guitar is really good.
I can only wonder at the George Harrison recording, but I'll say no mor'.
Always enjoy hearing your recordings.

I'm in complete agreement, Charlie. On the first few 'outings' I'd just think of the notes I wanted to play then I'd do my best to execute.

The more I learned, however, the more cluttered my mind was with fears of 'poor technique' or 'wait a minute - my hand's suppose to look different to this...'

All this stuff was forty years ago. I wonder if, in fact, I've got any better - I sometimes doubt it.

I kno what you're saying, your oldest recordings were so innocent sounding, like they flowed within the comfortable pocket of what you knew,
where the longer we play it sometimes gets a bit stumbled because we realize what all SHOULD be involved like blocking and other techniques.
Jerry Garcias steel stuff was always in the comfortable pocket, never too well done but rarely done poorly. Sometimes I listen to my recordings
when I first started in the 80s and I really don't know how I pulled off all I did, lucky maybe. I think when we first start playing we play what feels good,
versus later when we play what we think we should be playing.
I really enjoyed your stuff Roger.

Well put, John - '...what we should be playing.'

Ridiculous, isn't it?

Seems so, but what to do? Play what we like or play what they expect to hear?
Thing is, I get compliments at nearly every show, as I'm sure you guys do too, but half the time I don't know what the hell IM doin 😳

Guess if I don't know what I'm doin I'll just play what feels good, and if I do know what I'm doin I'll play what they spect a steeler to play.

Problem solved

Even as early as both of these samples were recorded ('74-ish) I'd been a pro musician for fifteen years or so and I had a pretty good idea of what I was being paid to provide - a musical flavouring that complemented the song and the singer.

Back then, though, mainstream pop music had only recently 'discovered' pedal steel and work of this type was plentiful. There were only a handful of British players who even had a steel so producing a generic 'sound' was often enough to satisfy the producers.

Of course I know more these days but I do occasionally feel wistful for the innocence (Charlie's word) of those first efforts.
