One, when I was having a lesson with Reece Anderson, I asked him about his non pedal playing. He told me that he felt playing non pedal was very beneficial for the pedal steel player, both for really working the left hand, and for really "seeing" what the pedals changed.

I filed it away for later consideration

I have considered

I was away for the weekend gigging up north, and look what came while I was away!

Bb6, tuned like Reece's C6 12 string non pedal tuning, a step lower. I go back and forth in my mind about tuning the lower Bb to B, both for the sake of the Dom7 chords and for ease on some of the bop lines, but I may just adjust as needed.

This is a great guitar, MSA - I am a customer for life already...

Not sure why this sideways, but you get the idea

I think you will find it liberating. Good luck with it!

What I really like is the fact that all the chords I think I need are not readily available to me without pedals, forcing me to find substitutions, and I often just choose triads. It keeps things sounding fresh, at least to my ears.

I couldn’t agree more. I spent many years playing pedal steel with an emphasis on jazz. Spending time with the non-pedal forced me to think about chord changes and navigating solo lines in a completely different way. That has definitely helped my pedal steel playing, although I find myself gravitating more and more to the non pedal these days as a way to express my musical ideas.

For me, it was the idea of condensing my harmonic concept to fit the limitations of a fixed eight string tuning (or two). I don’t know what I’d do with 12 strings…

FWIW:

My tuning is (low to high):

E - G# - A - B - D# - F# - G# - B - D# - F# - A# - C#

lost the lowest string because I could never get anything but a 'thud' out of it...

Inserted the A on the 10th string.

I'm finding its already paying off in my pedal steel playing - you really "see" the changes. I also dig how different it sounds - I was having some buyers remorse, but that's going away!

My pedal steel MSA is old-ish (maybe late 70s?). I find the string spacing a bit more relaxed than on the SS, read: way easier to play.

Initially I was a bit disappointed with the sound of the SS, but once played through my small tube amp at a slightly higher volume - man, that instrument really can sing.

That verb would not come to my mind with the pedal version.
