Does anybody make these? I did a little bit of Googling, but I couldn't find anything.
I have a Regal spidercone squareneck that a friend is trying to coerce me into pulling out and playing, and I was thinking about how nice it would be to have an eight-string resonator. Since a Benoit isn't exactly in my price range right now, I started thinking about retrofits.
I wouldn't think it would be that hard; all you'd need is a new nut, bridge, and some way to fit two more pegs on the headstock. _________________ If something I wrote can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, I meant the other one.

A few years back at the St. Louis convention someone was offering add-a-string kits for dobro. I believe it was someone with Beard Guitars or Goldtone.
Maybe Howard P. will look in here and offer some info. Maybe check with Gregg McKenna. You can find their contact info with a forum search. _________________ proud appalachian american

Don't forget the new claw! I agree, that's why I 'afforded' a Goldtone PSB8. It really is a blast, I keep mine in E13 for swingin' at the local acoustic jams.
Be ready to hear a quieter guitar... the extra strings make it harder to drive to full volume, there's more of a load on the spider.
... and Fishman doesn't make an 8-string JD pickup yet, more's the pity. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

There's plenty of room on the peghead for the extra strings. Here's my 7 string conversion of a Regal Black lightening:

Beard doesn't sell a kit. They do offer preslotted inserts, nuts & tails. They also offer an 8 string (G6) string set.
The design of your particular guitar will determine how to accommodate tuners.
Yep..The PBS-8 is absolutely the best deal around on an 8 string spider bridge guitar (imho)

I have 2 8 string resonator guitars: a Dobro I bought from Rudy and John in 1977, and a beautiful koa instrument with a sitka sproce top made for me by Dave Krause here in Seattle. Dave does superb work. He built me a 6 string koa/spruce machine, too. They cost me $2000 each. I'll try to figure out how to post pictures here so you can see them. Contact me offline for Dave's address. I wanted a 7 string like my friend, Larry Bohm's ShoBro 7. Rudy talked me into an 8 string model, which I played country and folk on until I started playing Hawaiian steel and heard Barney Isaacs play a Dobro 8 on his CD with George Kuo. _________________ Jack Aldrich

I had Tim Scheerhorn replace the cracked neck on my mahogany RQ JONES and convert it to an 8 string in 1995. It's for sale including Calton Case. |

That's a very nice looking resonator, Stephen. Unfortunately, I'll be operating on a college student budget for the near future, so it's not in the cards for now.
I'm not sure how far I'll even pursue the mod; it'll have to be pretty cheap for me to go for it, since I don't plan for this to be my main gig. I'd also feel silly spending more than the guitar is worth on mods. Next time I visit my parents, I'll bring it back with me and assess the situation. _________________ If something I wrote can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, I meant the other one.

You might be interested to know that 8-string mandoline tuners take up the same space as 6-string guitar tuners do, so it's a simple job to remove the tuners, fill in the centre holes with doweling, drill the additional holes, and insert the mandoline tuners. This can be done on virtually any 6-string guitar, with the exception of classical and flamenco guitars, which have bigger holes to fill up. |

I'll try to find pics of the (el cheapo) conversion I did on my Rogue BEFORE I actually did the REAL conversion,,,both work VERY well. Here you go,,this was a quickie conversion that served me well for a couple of years,,,then I did a more professional conversion (set of pics below these)
Here is the more "pro" version,,,
