I still have the original Wallace single coil Pup's on my Zum and I am wondering what you guys think. I am not completely happy with the sound.

Ron: For what it's worth: I briefly put a True Tone single coil into my Emmons push-pull, while the original Emmons PUP was being repaired. The Emmons sounded pretty good with the True Tone, but not the same. I strongly prefer the Emmons single coil PUP in the push-pull.

Also, you may have noticed my thread about putting an Emmons single coil in a Williams. One of the two PUPs that the Emmons replaced was a True Tone single coil.

I'm convinced that all single coils do not sound the same. Try an Emmons. If it doesn't work out, you can probably sell it for what you paid for it.

Ron if your looking for a humbucker you should try the Telonics 409 ... I have these on one of my Zum Hybrids and they are a fantastic pickup - my other Zum has TT's so I can compare quite well. The 409's are the best humbucker I have tried in a Zum

Another vote for the Teleonics 409 here. I had the Truetones, they sounded really good, but the 409s sound better.

Has anybody replaced the original single coil pickups in a Zum with the 409's? If so, is there enough of a difference to justify the cost of the Telonics?

George yes i replaced the original Trutones that Bruce put on my Hybrid when he built it with the 409's and I prefer the Telonics PU's on that guitar. I may change my other Hybrid to 409's as well but currently it still has the TT's

George,
I swapped out the Truetones for the 409s.

It was absolutely worth it. The Truetones were very good. The 409s sound fantastic in the Zum.

Chris , I don't recall what I paid, it was a bit more than the average, but worth it.

A pickup swap can be the least expensive investment I can think of that may have a big impact on your overall sound . A cheap thrill when you compare it to some of the things we spend our money on.

What happened to all the praise for the Alumitone pickup on a Zum?

Thanks for all the responses. Paddy and Steve, my Zum has the original 1982 single coil pickups. I was hoping somebody had replaced the original single coils with a 409, not replacing True Tones. I had a True Tone in an Emmons PP and I thought it had better string separation than the original single coil pickup. Based on my experience with the TT, I would agree that they sound good.

I have always preferred the sound of single coils over humbuckers. But, Steve and Paddy, you both say that the 409's sound great in a Zum, so I am going to try a 409 as soon as I have the money.

Isn't that the Tonealigner copy?
I'm getting a Tonealigner put on the C6th neck of my Zum.

hey george, interestingly enough my zum is an 82. even though i think the emmons pickups sound slightly better on the zum, i put the zums on the old emmons and it sounds really good with them.

I find it very hard to beat the sound of a Wallace TruTone.

If I'm not mistaken, Bruce wound the pickups on my '82 Zum. He showed me a contraption he'd made for that purpose using sewing machine parts.

I was doing a gig years ago on my Zum D-10, & the E9 pickup crapped out. I just happened to have a spare PP pickup & soldering iron in my gig bag, so during the break I pulled the strings, swapped the busted Zum pickup with the Emmons PP pickup, & re-strung the guitar. My Zum never sounded better!

They're fabulous on a Zum. Lee Horgan had one that I got to try out.

I can't find the 409 pickup on the Telonics site. Anyone link me to photos, and pricing? Thanks.
