It's Hendrick.

He's been talked about numerous times over the last 15 years on this forum, a lot of it by you.

See above link.

I've never seen a picture and can't recall anything other than what's in the above link. By all accounts he was from Shelby, North Carolina, as was Don Gibson.

He played a Sho-Bud in the 1980s, but I don't know of any recordings he made after the early/mid 1950s with Gibson.

Here's some early pix of Don and his band circa 1952-1954, but I think that's Sonny Burnette on steel--not Summie Hendrick.

I believe his full name is Summie Lee Hendrick.
Stoney Stonecipher brought him to the ISGC in the 1980s.
He only had knee levers on his MSA S-10 guitar, due to a prosthetic left leg.
As I recall he sounded quite a bit like Joaquin Murphey. Cool

I believe he played steel for Don Gibson in the late 1940s & early 1950s.

The first pix in this series , is Summie Lee (Eagle-eye) Hendricks. The two bottom pix are Sonny Burnett. Eagle-Eye patterned his playing like Joquin Murphy. That was his inspiration. Sumnmie Lee was a great musoician.

Stoney:

Can you ID each of the people in the first picture, left to right?

That's Don and I think Junior Huskey to the right.

More info on Summie from a web search:

http://www.archives.com/1940-census/summie-hendrick-nc-94813155

He was 5 years old and living with his parents Summie and Evelyn in Shelby NC in 1940, per the above 1940 census. That would make him a mid-teenager when he began recording with Don Gibson.

Presumably passed away in Strawberry Plains, TN, about 20 miles east of Knoxville, near the NC border. His widow Betty died last August. His family goes back multiple generations in NC.

The fiddle player in pictures 2&3 was Jim Barber.
Jim and Don were from Shelby NC. Their first band was called "The Hi lighters" Milton Scarborogh, Howard Sisk were members. Their first record was done in early 1949 put out by Mercury their name was changed to "Sons of the soil" Jim was with Don at The Mid day Merry-go round. Summie Hendrick was on Don's second recording done in Charlotte NC 1950. Their name then was "Don Gibson and his Cotton Kingfolks". He also played on the third done in Nashville 1951 Chet Atkins was on it also. Bill Paisley

In the first picture is left to right; Eagle-eye, Jack Cate(bass), Jim Barber and Don. In the second picture is; Jim Barber, Don , Sonny Burnett, and Jr. Huskey on the bass. The third picture is; left to right; Jim Barber, lead I don't know, Sonny Burnett, Jr. Huskey and Don. Bill Paisley, who is on the forum, knew most of these people personally, like I did. And probably has a better memory than I do.
