I'm looking for a 4ohm K130 to put in the Milkman amp I just ordered. I have an 8ohm K130. Should I just get it reconed? And if so, who's good at it?

If it's an original cone and in good shape, DON'T get it reconed. It won't sound as good if reconed.

I put an 8 ohm K120 in my MM Mini and it sounds great. The amp won't put out quit as much power running at 8 ohms as it will at 4 ohms, but it won't hurt that amp a bit. Tim Marcus confirmed that for me.

Warning: A K130 may not fit into a MM Mini without modifying either the amp head or the speaker. Either choice is not a good idea, unless Tim can make it work. A D130 will fit into a Mini. The outer flange on the K130 was made thicker. A K120 fits easily, using a converter ring.

An 8 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm amp load won't hurt the amp or the speaker, and difference in volume/power will be minimal. I've been running an 8 ohm K120 with a 4 ohm amp for years now with no problems......I would leave it if it's the original cone.

Same with my K130 8 ohm now that I think about it...I've used and abused it for years with high wattage 4 ohm amplifiers...

Ok, that's what Bob Hoffnar was saying too, about the volume difference possibly being negligible. Last night I A/Bd the 8ohm JBL with a Weber 4ohm California 15", using a Bassman head. The Weber was a good bit louder and the JBL sweeter. The Milkman Sideman 50 is what I'm getting. Just one of those things. I think I want a 4ohm K130 if I can find one. Thanks, Dave and Paul!

recone the jbl and you ruin it. my stars... i bet you cant even find an original jbl cone kit for it. all other kits dont sound like the original.

just put the thing in something and fire it up. if you like the 130 it wont matter if its 4 or 8.

play...dont worry about ohms.....

Well, since I don't have the Milkman to play through yet, I'm doing my worrying ahead of time. My 40watt Bassman through the K130 is NOT loud enough for every situation and it's not as loud as my Deluxe Reverb. I do have the Weber if I need it though. Thanks.

you have something wrong with your bassman then.

i would A/B the two amps through the jbl. do not use the bass channel on the bassman. they are awful. use only the normal channel.

that will tell you a lot about how the bassman is really running. do the same test swapping out the preamp tubes for the channel you run between each amp.

make sure the jbl is all original and has the jbl cone/voice coil. if you dont know the history of the speaker then you dont really know what you have.

let us know what you find.

It's probably due for a recap. Sounds great at low volume though. The Bass channel does sound crappy.

I'd wondered if this was a recone. It did come out of a PA after all. I guess there are codes on it? I may have to take it out to look. Thanks!

PS you are talking about a bassman head right?? two channels. running right, it should blow your delux reverb away vol wise.

Yeah, it's the AA165 circuit. They only made it for a month. BTW, I agree it needs servicing, as it breaks up way early.

Hey John, For what it's worth, I actually preferred the Telonics speaker over an 8 ohm D130F in my Sideman. The JBL had a ton of presence and spaciousness but the high end was a little over the top. Especially with the way the reverb is voiced. When I put the Telonics back in the frequency response seemed much more pleasing and even to me. Maybe I just have a weird JBL. It is an orange basket with the original cone that my boss at work had in storage for years.

He's talking about the K series, which has a mellower top end and higher handling power. I actually prefer the K's over the D's for pedal steel because of that..

I would like to try a Telonics speaker someday. Smile

Bill Hatcher is right on! That Bassman has almost twice the electrical power output as a Deluxe, and a Bassman with the closed-back speaker cabinet is easily twice as efficient as an open-backed Deluxe. Therefore, a good-running Bassman (with the big closed babinet) is roughly equivalent, actual audio output-wise, to the average 75-80 watt guitar amp. Winking

Yeah, enough about my Bassman please! It has it's original tubes and caps and it's not my working amp. It was the only head I had around to A/B these 2 speakers and the Weber was considerably louder through it. When I mentioned both speakers to Tim Marcus, he pretty much said the Weber wouldn't sound as great but it'd be my best bet, being 4 ohms. After searching around last night, it looks like JBL didn't make a K130 4ohm. is this right?

Yes they did. They made a 4 ohm for Peavey's Session 400 amps. It was one of the first speakers Peavey used. I've had a couple of them over the years. They are black frames and have a JBL made for Peavey label on them. I don't now where you'd find one now.

They probably put out their own labeled 4 ohm drivers also, but I don't know that for sure.

If you really are set on a 4 ohm K, you can probably find one if you wait long enough and look long enough. Personally, I've used the 8 ohm version and hardly noticed little, if any loss in volume. Do what you want, but I'd stick that 8 ohm in there and be done with it.

I have a 4 ohm K130; so yes they did make at least a few of those. Mine is JBL labeled, not Peavey labeled.

Sorry to irritate you further John Wink , but I just remembered Randall Steelman amps used 4 ohm JBL K130's in their first steel amps so they're out there. I wish you the best of luck finding one. I'm a firm believer that one should have whatever they think is best or whatever they want.
