Topic: South of Honolulu composer? |

Was Dick Mcintyre the composer of South of Honolulu or is the song older than the 30s? Anyone know? I'm coming up with no answers when I search. Rick Aiello came up with a blank in checking the Cumquat CD liner notes.

Link to BMI listing.
I have no idea if this is the same song.
I don't think BMI was founded until 1939. I can't find the title at ASCAP. Maybe it went unpublished until later on, after the emergence of BMI.

Hmmmm. Eddie Bush and Roland Ball .... makes sense as a provenance for the tune. Dick Mcintyre and Bush both worked in LA in the 30s and could have crossed paths at gigs and/or Ball's studio.

I did a little more searching and it looks like Dick never had an ordinary 78 rpm release on that song on Decca. I thought I'd be able to find a label shot that listed the composers under the title.
It appears to have been released only on a Standard transcription, dating from 1939 or 1940. So it may have been published immediately at that time with BMI and would appear to be one of the earliest songs ever registered with BMI. I think of BMI as being mostly a post-war outfit. |
