I have been thinking about getting a pickup for my non resonator acoustic Hawaiian guitar. A chance to buy a Fender Acoustasonic Pro has come up for $250 but I haven't bought a pickup for the guitar yet to try it out. What are your opinions on the Acoustasonic
Pro? What pickup would you get for an old birch topped Hawaiian guitar? Thanks! |

Make sure the tweeter isn't blown, those tend to go. Not a bad amp, the notch anti-feedback works pretty good. My Roland 40XL actually sounds better for acoustic guitar, though... it doesn't have any anti-feedback stuff. The DSP model is a little better I think, that's the one I have anyway. Any of the magnetic soundhole pickups should get you going. If this is the older (non-DSP) model I'd hold out for $150. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

Thanks the amp has the onboard DSP but no foot switch. After reading the manual online it looks like it could be a useful practice vocal PA as well.
I should have mentioned before, I use D'Addario flat tops for the Hawaiian guitar. |

Stephen, are you talking about the Acoustasonic Junior or the Acoustasonic Pro? This amp is the Pro with 160 watts of power. The pro seems much less common than the Junior. |

Oh yeah, the junior is what I was talking about... I didn't realize the difference, my bad. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

My bandmate uses an Acoustisonic 2 with his nylon string acoustic. It has a very warm and transparent tone and you would swear you were in a Concert Hall hearing a pure acoustic tone. It is quite beautiful with a nylon string guitar. .. he doesn't like it with his electric guitars and we have never tried it with steel...My guess is that it would sound better with darker smoother toned instruments than with bright and twangy.
The amp has a real nice way it transfers touch dynamics and air. .eg.. it breathes nicely. .... and it has a way to dial in a very subtle amount of chorus that adds a little bit of extra dimension to the tone without making it sound flubby.. metallic. .. or lowfi... which most chorus circuits suffer f from imo.
He has a blend preamp that uses both a piezo and some kind of mic inside the guitar. He dials in just enough of the mic signal to add the natural resonance on top of a full piezo signal. Dialling in too much mic makes it sound boomy.... all piezo makes it sound synthetic. The blend hits the sweet spot. |
