Yesterday I spent the afternoon at Vic Lawson's steel guitar shop. I was buying an older twin reverb from him that used to belong to Joshua Motahashi. It's one of the best twins I ever heard. I figured it'd be a great opportunity to compare with my new Little Walter 89. We spent a couple hours comparing amps separately and through the same speaker. I'm proud to say that the Little Walter , in my opinion , sounded the best of all the amps that we played. It also felt the best which I'm assuming is because of the tube rectifier. The amp is incredibly responsive to the touch.

1.) Did you try the Normal channel on the Twin?
2.) Was it worth the price differential?

I like to see these done double-blind, or at least, blind.

How does the normal channel sound different besides the reverb?

David, the dry signal in the reverb channel runs through a 3.3meg/10pF network... this tends to make the signal brighter, taking out some warmth... it's like a big 'choke' point for the signal. You have to sit and play with one... due to tolerances on the 10pF cap, different amps can sound radically different, dry to wet channels compared. Preamp tubes make a huge difference, if there's a really good tube in V2 (reverb) and a slouch in V1 (normal) then the effect can go away or be different. Anyway, comparing amps to amps, you should probably use the channel that's closest to the other amp.
