Who were the originators of these 2 companies? Seems like Tom Brumley and Zane Beck are the closest link to the 2, that I know of.

Thanks

Dwight

Far as I know, Zane Beck for ZB and later BMI, Beck Musical Instruments by Zane Beck.

I believe Tom Brumley bought the ZB Custom line sometime in late 70's, early 80's.

There are others here who can probably give you the complete history, eras of build etc. better than me, however.

Zane Beck started the ZB company and built steels from 1964 to 1968. In 1969, he sold the company to Tom Brumley. Tom later partnered with Bill Simms and then in the late 70's took sole ownership. Sometime in the later 80's, Tom sold the company to Basil Smith. Basil passed away in 1991 and the company passed with him. Zane Beck had an agreement with Tom to not build any guitars for 5 yrs if my memory is correct. He started BMI in 1974 and the company is still going strong today.

Yes, correct - Zane signed a five-year
'non-competition' clause as part of the sale.
