If one has time, it's best to do it yourself. It really helps for those situations where you have to transpose on the fly on a gig.

Just my $.02. Not that I am in any way averse to the conveniences of modern technology, but I have noticed dramatic drop-off in some of my skills because of it.

My first thought was: How do they make any money off that?
My second thought was similar to Mr. Neer's. My guitar students are ALWAYS finding that stuff -
"Look! You can get a double harmonic scale in F#"
I say, "nice but where IS it?"
They say "right there! on the screen!"
I say "But where IS it? How does it go..."
"It's RIGHT THERE! You just type in what you want."
Stupid old people.

both sitting there with guitars on our laps, you would think.... Alien

I find these useful. I especially like Ralph Patt's "Vanilla Changes" versions. I like to reharmonize jazz tunes (on guitar, at least), but sometimes I get the feeling that after a chain of 3 and 4 successive reharmonizations, the original tune can get lost, at least if someone is starting way down the chain.

I have to confess, however, that I have a hard time imagining, for example, a tune like All Blues without the 7#9's in the turnaround. That is too vanilla for me, since I think it's part of the basic song.

Agreed some of the Vanilla songs miss the true Colour that makes it Jazz. It's more like what I'd expect either extremely advanced players to us who have a mastery for voicings and substitutions. Or absolute beginners who are trying to fake jazz.

Good stuff on the Realbook site. Been using Ralph Patt's stuff for years but hadn't found this one. Thanks b0b.

Further, I find the Vanilla Book particularly helpful showing songs to the guys that help me with steel shows. Most of them are not very familiar with the jazz and big band stuff I want to do, so these charts help them see the form of the songs.

Then we can work out the finer details of the music as we go along.
