many thanks in advance for the good information you guys always have for me. I have an early 70's tele custom with the Gibson style electronics (2 vol., 2 tone, 3 way toggle. The only electronics modification was a coil tap added to the original humbucker.

Neither tone control works. I'm wondering if the orange things (capacitors?) should be changed out as a starting point to address this problem. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Howard,
Without putting the guitar on the workbench it's a guessing game, but the caps would be the last thing I would suspect. Probably a mis-wire or broken connection somewhere.

Best regards,

Thanks Craig. I'll open it up and see if I can detect anything questionable. Howard

Since neither tone control works, I would guess that the ground wire is missing/broken that connects the back of the tone pots to the jack sleeve (ground). Got an image?

Robert, that is a great list of diagrams, but not a single one has 4 pots! This was actually pretty funny to me by the 64th diagram, haha. Very Happy

He may have better luck with the typical les paul diagram.
Im guessing a wire or two is loose inside is all.

Thanks to all who have replied. The guitar is in Florida at the present time. I'll be there in a few weeks and will open it up to see what gives. I'll follow up once I have a look.

I finally got to dealing with this today. It did turn out to be a problem with a solder joint on a ground wire. Thanks to all who helped me with this.
