Anyone using ear bud monitors for live gigs? If so how do they sound and what brand are you using? _________________ MSA CLassic SD-10

H Greg,
We just started using in-ear monitoring. We are running a Allen and Heath board with the ME-1 personal monitor system. I am using an older pair of the Shure SE ear buds. (I think they where SE-C2 if I recall, or something like that.)
Every thing works fine if everyone uses the in-ear system. Unfortunately we have a singer who wants floor wedges. This tends to be a problem in that you get bleed through on your in-ears and it makes you second guess your volume.
We have mic'ed acoustic drums and also used digital drums. If the player is not too loud that works fine too.
I do like the clarity. No distractions and you can hear yourself with the ME-1 system and control your personal mix.
My two cents.

I have Westone UM-2s. Overall I do like the control that we have over stage levels but I miss hearing the real tone coming from my amplifier.
The IEMs seem to compress everything and there's no longer that indefinable quality of 'moving air' that comes from a good amp and guitar.
I know that my IEMs are a long way from being top-of-the-line (they were around $200) and perhaps I'd get real benefit from more expensive ones but, so far, this is the extent of my experience.
I wouldn't want to go back to the every-man-for-himself ethic that used to prevail on the band-stand, though! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Roger I have the molded 3-way Westones and they sound good, but not 5x the money over the UM-2s. The UM-2s sound great and the bottom end is actually better than the molded ones I have provided I have a good fit with the ear tips |
