I don't think the L1's would be a good choice instead of a good steel amp. Maybe if you used the direct out from a steel amp to the L1, that might work. You might need the additional bass cabinets for the L1.
A few years ago, I was interested in the L1 for our bands PA system. Here is what I found out: For the L1 system to work properly, everything needs to feed through it. A mixture of amps and the L1 system makes it difficult to get a good mix out front. This is because the L1 delivers the same sound volume any place in the room. The amps will be louder the closer you are to them and not as loud the farther you get from them. Now think about this. How are you going to get the same sound volume anywhere in the room by having amps and the L1 going at the same time, unless the amps are fed into the L1 and you don't crank the amp up until the volume overpowers the L1.
