I'll be in Austin for a few days, and I could much use pointers from y'all on where to see good pedal steel. Thanks for your help. |

I've got a country gig at the moon tower saloon on 10212 manchaca road 8:00 on the 2nd
Then on the 6th at 6:00 at the shady grove on Barton springs rd. ( country). The singer is Aaron McDonnell on those gigs. He is a truly gifted country singer.
On the 7th my band the mood illusion plays whatever the heck you want to call it music 9:00 at the stay gold on Chavez. We have a steady weds and haven't been fired yet.
Get in touch there is tons of chances to hear and hang with steel players in Austin. Look up Dale Watson if he is not on the road you shouldn't miss him. Also Ricky Davis has been playing with Scott Angle on Thursday happy hour at Billy's. I'm not sure if that gig is happening then though. The broken spoke and white horse usually have steel players in the bands. _________________ Bob |

thanks Mr. Bob. What's the best guitar shop in town? I'd like to pick-up some thumbpicks and maybe shop around for a little "souvenir" for myself. |

Tom,
For Tues. Oct. 6th:
Little Longhorn Saloon - 7:00 pm, Fingerpistol, country band with Neil Flanz on Pedal Steel, 5434 Burnet Road. (formerly Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon). Small Texas roadhouse experience.
The Broken Spoke - 8:00 pm, Weldon Henson, country with Ricky Davis on Pedal Steel, 3201 South Lamar Blvd. Texas dancehall with large dance floor. Check out the tourist trap museum!
Not sure about Wed thru Sat yet, but here are two:
Wed. Oct. 9th:
El Mercado - 6:30 - 8:30 pm, Cornell Hurd Band, honky tonk, boogie & western swing, James Shelton will be on Pedal Steel this night, 1302 South 1st Street. New stage just put in for bands.
Thurs. Oct. 8th:
Little Longhorn Saloon - 9:00 pm, Alvin Crow, Austin country mainstay, usually has a steel player, but may not have one on this gig currently. Pete Mitchell is usually playing guitar (Texas Troubadour). Always a good time no matter who is in the band line-up.
If I get more info on shows with steel, I'll post back here.
Enjoy,
Ted Smouse

I usually steer folks to Steve down at Austin Vintage...

now that they've moved downtown I don't get in there enough... he used to be on the north side, that was best for me. South Austin Guitars is another good one, right next to the Saxon Pub... so 2 birds, one stone. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

So, Tom May,
How was your visit? Did you get out to hear any music, and/or pick up any new instruments while in town?
