I've been playing music and singing professionally for well over 40 years. I play Guitar, Bass, Piano and most other stringed instruments.
BUT:for the last 10 years I have been focused on Non-Pedal Steel. I just can get enough of it!
I still love my Telecaster, and my Shobud LDG, but rarely play them compared to my Lap Steels and resonators.
Perhaps it's the challenge of trying to squeeze out every bit of music I hear in my head, and lay it out with a bar on some strings. (with no frets or pedals)
It would be much easier to play the Jazz Standards I love so much on a Guitar or Piano, or even on pedal steel with all the chords available. But I am totally obsessed with my 12 string lap steel.
Even given the limitations of a six string steel with C6 or A6 tuning. I would choose that over the above mentioned instruments!
I am hopelessly hooked!

Same story here. Over the years the non-pedal steel has crowded out my primary instrument, the six stringer. It has also made my U12 pedal steel a second class citizen in my house. I can't seem to resist arranging tunes, especially old standards, including jazz standards, on my Remington D8 Steelmaster. I had a chance to discuss this situation briefly with Herb Remington when I placed my order for the Steelmaster a few years ago. Regarding the obvious increased interest in non-pedal steel in recent years, Herb said "The hand is connected to the heart."
I just feel more expressive without the pedals and, since I am not a singer, I feel that I am "singing" through that bar and those strings with no additional mechanisms between me and the music. I still love to play pedal steel and guitar, but that D8 calls me away from them most of the time. Hopeless I guess.
I find it interesting that the only real popular steel guitar instrumental "hit" with wide audience appeal and seemingly eternal duration was "Sleepwalk" which was musically simple but loaded with expression and gets people's attention to this day...no pedals needed, just a beautiful "singing" melody played with feeling. It got me and many others to start playing steel guitar back then. |
