So last night at an outdoor gig I plugged in my Seymour Duncan Twin Tube, set the rhythm controls to be clean, I liked it, gave the steel a little more body.
On my PV bass preamp I have a tube side and a solid state side. After playing the banjo on the tube side I forgot to switch back to the ss side for the steel. It about blew me out of my chair, big, clean etc. I left if that was the rest of the night, sounded killer outside.
Since it worked I guess that a tube into a tube is not such a bad combination, tube amps do it from stage to stage.
Might be to much for a club gig but come Sunday we will find out. _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

I swear by the tube into a tube thing. And if you think about it, even in a Fender or say a Milkman amp, for example, you have an input tube stage, another tube gain stage, another tube stage, a tube phase splitter stage and then power tubes. That's a tube into a tube into a tube into a tube into a tube.
Or in the Revelation preamp there is the Black Box tube buffer stage, then the preamp stage 1, then the preamp stage 2, and then the driver stage, and some guys use tube power amps with that.
Or your hardcore audiophiles may have a tube phono preamp into a tube preamp into a tube power amp. Or in the studio you may have a $10,000 vintage tube Neumann mic into a Telefunken tube preamp. In the mastering studios, many of our favorite records pass thru a number of tube stages in the compressors and equalizers... It goes on and on in the high-end audio tone world.
Tubes still rule!!!

like brad, i'm a tubeaholic and will run any tube thing into another tube thing. but, every now and then i'll run a solid state thing into a tube thing. just to get something different going.

I use a Black Box in front of many amp SS and tube. One interesting thing I discovered by accident, is using the BB with a Roland XL 80 head into the Blackface and combo setting. So now you have the signal going through a tube into a SS modeling amp for a more authentic vibe.
And yes, the Roland XL80 amp was a combo. I did not like the speaker and you can't replace it as it is really an 11.5 inch speaker and not a 12 inch standard speaker.
This was a major effort to cut this combo into a head and I don't recommend it unless you are very adventurous and like saw dust. |

So, I'm discovering the same advantages to tubes. An all tube chain is sounding great for both fiddle and pedal steel. Haven't tried a banjo or mandolin yet, but encouraged by your observations that I'll appreciate the same improvement. |
