I might be hard to say whether Kleinow used a flanger or a phaser on the tune; he was a wiz at it, and it may be his own special recipe.

Knowing there are a couple of guys on the Forum that know a bit about the man and his gear, I'm looking for a good guess.
You know how it is--if I can't play like him, I'll try for the sound and fake the rest. Neutral

When I was playing full time back in the 80's, I used an MXR flanger for rock tunes. It was blast!

Good suggestion, Jack, I'm thinking phaser or flanger.

It's a Phase 90. It was built into Pete's guitar. I use the same thing (or a 1/2 size clone).. Keep it on a fairly low setting and you'll nail it. Also - no reverb, just analog delay.

Pete also used an envelope filter fairly often - I don't hear it there and he didn't mention it, but on an extremely low setting it does seem to add *something* undefinable to the sound.

Thanks, Jim, you're the answer man I was looking for.

Knew that about the reverb and delay (from you); I don't hear the phaser much except on this particular tune (and some on his albums).
Appreciate it.

I won't diss Jim s as he knows a lot about this sort of thing, more than I ever will, but that is a very deep effect on the steel on that tune, with some serious swoop and swoon... To my ears it sounds like old school thumb on the tape spool flanging... I can't be sure of course, but it doesn't sound anything like a stomp box phaser to me... I suppose it could be a phase 90, but its unlike any P 90 I ever owned, and I had a few of the original script logo jobs...
I say it was "thumb flanged"... bob
