Roger and Craig,
IMHO, negative comments do not help the steel guitar community.
Promoters (inc. myself) devote our lives to this instrument and the people who play it.
Just think of all the great years this show has been around. That does not happen easily.

| Scotty is the one who started "Steel Guitar Shows" All other shows owe thanks to Scotty for laying the ground work. Scotty has done more for the steel guitar than anyone in the world. There would not be all the available teaching material, and other related information if were not for Scotty starting the ball rolling. I have the highest respect for what Scotty has accomplished. Scotty has earned everyone's respect and support. Just my opinion. |

I don't think that Roger's statement was negative. Sometimes, that "let's just think positive thing" can varnish over reality. Roger is sad about that and I can be too, should I choose to and reflect on how steel manufacturers used to dot the periphery of the convention hall.

I don't disagree with you completely, I just think if that statement was to be made, it should be in a separate post. Not in the ISGC post advertising the show.

For most, seeing a booth set up from a steel guitar mfr is one of the reasons we go to the ISGC, second only to hearing the great performances. The ability to look at and try out instruments we would not ordinarily get a chance to play is unique and for me, worth the trouble to travel to this show.
If there are truly only four mfrs exhibiting, and assuming the reason is the expense, perhaps a deal could be made to subsidize the cost of their booth so more steels would be on display. Maybe a "tip jar" at registration where an extra dollar could be tossed in to help pay for booths for steel guitar mfrs. That way we all win.

1) These days are not like the past when manufacturers had a "fleet" of steels at their shops and pretty much make steels when there is an order and don't have steels "standing around".
2) If I ordered a new steel, I sure would not like my new steel being "pawed over" by a bunch of people I did not know, unless the price was discounted. That kind of steel is called a "display model"
3) With the way money is these days, I don't think a tip jar would add up to much.
4) There is the cost of a booth, but there is travel expenses and time to "get it all together" as well as food and lodging.
5) To make the effort to display at a convention, for a business, there needs to be the prospect of sales. In today's market, there's not many fish in that pond.
Excuse the negativity, just seems to be the reality.

Chris while I don't disagree, what you described is a classic self fulfilling prophesy.
Yes, display models are necessary. There are expenses associated with displaying. The old adage you have to spend money to make money is still true. So some mfrs will opt out to "save" some money but they'll lose sales they would have made otherwise.
They might be great builders but not necessarily great businessmen

| I too liked all the venders. I got to go three times and right before I left in the late afternoon I went shopping! A course or two from Fran and Doug, Acouple caps, a new pedal and a few cds. A great way to end the day! |

Russ Hicks was there but His builder was not.
Apparently they did not have enough stock built to show. In fact Russ was waiting for his new steel to be finished, so he played his ShoBud. |
