What is this gizmo inside the red circle? It's on a '72 D10 8X4 Professional rack & barrel guitar. It's located between the RKR & RKL baskets. It is spring loaded with collars on each end and the collars have set screws so this spring cannot compress or expand. The pull rod in this device goes through the 11th hole in the basket, not through one of the 10 usable basket holes. The rod is cut off at the baskets and does not extend elsewhere in either direction. Both the RKR & RKL component trains work correctly and do not touch this device. Any ideas what this is or was?

I have no clue. Is it a Crossover guitar? You should ask James or Ricky. I've never seen anything like this. _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

No John, it is not a crossover. Just a plain jane D10 Professional. Meanwhile, I just found this old forum photo while searching for answers. The same type of device on this guitar is on the 7th string and its rod does not extend back into the changer finger. I believe this is something to do with a "feel stop" perhaps. New to me. At any rate, mine does nothing and goes nowhere. Just wondering what it's about.

I should have read the entire posts rather than just searching for photos. Here are some interesting texts that accompanied that above photo:
--------------------------
Most r&b Buds never had a discreet half stop on the 2nd string. They usually used the start of travel on the 9th string lower as a feel stop...the barrel on the 9th string comes into contact with the rack when the 2nd string reaches the D natural.
As long as there's enough tension on the spring at the changer on the 9th string, you should feel it just fine.
--------------------------
If you look at the RKR lever on Jon Hydes picture, aside from the 2nd string lower linkage there is also a rod that runs from the RKR 7th string rack-hole through a barrel and eventually through a compression spring which abuts a bracket. Note also that this rod does not extend back into the changer
The 2nd string is lowered by itself until the barrel on that 7th string partial rod is contacted. Once the barrel is contacted contunued knee lever movement causes spring compression. The increased resitance of the spring compressing creates the "stop" feel.
To tune it, you reach underneath the guitar and adjust the barrel to tune the 2nd string to D at the stop point. Screwing the barrel in sharpens the "D-note" and screwing it out flattens it.
----------------------------
Note on my OP that this device is located between the RKR and RKL baskets. So, there is no room for a barrel on my setup as there are no more baskets between there and the changer.
The fact that it was placed in the 11th hole really made no difference since it does not connect to the changer anyway. Just a convenient spot to locate it I suppose, but it does rely on this gizmo's spring pressure for the feel stop rather than the missing barrel.
Always more than one way to do anything on an old Bud. |
