I was tearing down my steel the other night and this guy wanted to help...arrgh. He said what are you tearing down your steel for ya'll are playing here again next Saturday too. I said I might want to practice this week. He said "Practice!!? What in in world do you need to practice for you already know how to play"? ...Duh...

A bit off-topic (well, a lot off-topic) we had some of the best bbq we have ever eaten, back in early July, at Coopers, there in Llano. Crazy good stuff.

The term used around here is 'rehearse'. That paints a different picture in their mind.

I hear ya. I play guitar at the 9:00 contemporary service at our church. Our group "practices" once a week.
The 11:00 service has a traditional choir with pipe organ. They "rehearse" once a week.  |

I've rehearsed but I never liked to practice, which is why I'm the musician I am today. 
But Cooper's in Llano, that's a different subject, takes no practice to get barbecue all over your fingers.

| When my wife and I had our band, we would rehearse for the new songs we were learning. Other than that, we never rehearsed almost at all. All the guys are seasoned musicians and really don't need to. New songs sometimes require intricate pieces to be played and they sometimes need rehearsal. Most country songs are three chords with a couple of minors or a 2 chord thrown in the mix. Not very hard to do. Personally, if I'm playing a cover song, I like to get the steel parts down, if they're significant or they're really important to the song to be recognized. I still call that band rehearsal, not practice. Practice to me is some one sitting down to learn more steel technique or better intonation or chordal structure or wood shedding a song to play solo on. To me, they're two different entities, both serve a good purpose, though. Just my opinion. |

I was in two bands that never rehearsed (or practice) at all. I was in one from 2006 - 2012 and the other from 2006 to 2013, and they were very good bands with good players. You learned your parts at home and showed up and played.

Except in your case the audience might be too bent on drinking, dancing, and getting laid to pay any attention to how well the musicians are playing... |

I don't mind practice but why do singers want to sing every song on the set list in its entirety? Work on new stuff till it becomes old!

There's a similar overlap in meaning over here - generally rehearsing is communal and practice is private, but brass bands "practise" - I guess they find "rehearse" too pretentious.
When I conducted a youth concert band we had a rule "no practising in rehearsal" to stop kids trying over something they should have mastered already.

| Some say "practice makes perfect". I was taught that perfect practice makes perfect. Plan practice, execute the plan, evaluate and repeat. Practice is what you do on your own time. Rehearsal is what is done as a group. By the way they need to be planned also. Just my two cents. |

Hey Lee, that Coopers BBQ is still blowing and going. There is usually a line about a block or so long. Llano County is the white tail Deer Capital of Texas and you can really believe business picks up there then. Like Charlie said about the greasy fingers, Ive had a few of them coming out of there myself. I was hoping you might know about the Quad 8 string I posted over in 'steels without pedals' but I guess he wasn't enough south as you are. I was thinking Aransas Pass was closer to you. Check it out anyway over in the no pedal section.

That is how l have always understood the words. A practice session may contain only technical exercises and none of the band material. And I try not to practise in rehearsal
