Do any of you guys use one of the old 70's EV SRO "coffee can" 15" speakers for pedal steel? Just got one and plan to compare it to a D130F,Sica,and a EPS15C....any thoughts, insights ?? Yeah... I know they weigh 25 lbs ! Thanks... _________________ https://www.reverbnation.com/bigredandtheresonators |

Thanks Chris... I've been using the SRO 12's for guitars..love them aside from the weight..Am thinking the 15" SRO would be a great pairing with a '69 Dual Showman Reverb... and separate cab.. _________________ https://www.reverbnation.com/bigredandtheresonators |

I also have the 12" EV SRO. Mine has the white plastic mag covering. Great speaker. I use it mostly for guitar. Mine came in an old "West" combo amp. Yes, I like it better then any of the ones you've listed. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

I have one in my BF Twin Reverb...best speaker ever made. IMHO, it blows away any of the JBL's. It is unGODly heavy, though. ![Cool](images/smiles/icon_cool.gif) |

I have a modded Silver Face Fender Deluxe Reverb with one of the "coffee-can SRO 12's. It's my favorite small gig amp. That speaker sounds great for pedal steel or guitar. |

I had a blackface twin, with twin SRO 12s . The weight of the speakers destroyed the baffle board. It actually caved in due to the weight. Funny thing, it was a blackface drip edge. I replaced the baffle board with plywood.
I was a blues guitar bum at the time, and discovered how much better I liked the Super for six string. I traded away the twin for a triple neck Rick when I got the steel bug.
I was too stupid to know it at the time, but that blackface twin with coffee can SROs may have been a holy grail steel amp. I wouldn't mind finding that one again. |

Back in the 70's I put a pair of 12" SRO's in my BF Twin. Had no car, lived in Brookline, MA, and carried them home quite a ways from an electronics store in Allston near Boston University to my apartment. Best 12's I ever owned!! _________________ --carl

Ah, yes - coffee can SROs. Probably the best clean guitar speaker ever made, to my tastes - at least for an open-back cabinet. Clean but not sterile or woofy. I used a '64 Deluxe Reverb with a 12" CC SRO for pedal steel until the band got too loud for it. I've probably tried about every other speaker there is, but have never been in the right place at the right time to get a 15" coffee can. But I generally prefer 12" speakers anyway, even for pedal steel.
Um, Carl - RS or Lafayette down on Commonwealth around St. Mary's St.? I used to traipse daily from between Coolidge Corner and Brookline Village down there and over to Cambridge from late-60s to circa 74. My first real amp was a blackface Bandmaster, with a fairly compact wood-shop speaker cab with 2-12" speakers from Lafayette - I believe they were just cheap Jensens. OK, I had an old 30-watt Bogen monoblock head that I wired 1/4" jacks onto before that. Hardly anybody I knew drove - streetcars/subway would take me most anywhere I couldn't walk. Used to haul that head/cab on a hand-truck down the road if it wasn't too far and I couldn't get someone to drive me. Even took it on the streetcar sometimes, if it wasn't rush-hour and jam-packed. |

Dave - it was DeMambro on Comm Ave , right after the left turn on the outbound "C" car and before Harvard Ave. I schlepped them from there to Coolidge Corner with a couple of breaks to get my rubbery muscles back, even at 23 years old - hah! I needed cash and sold the speakers to Randy Roos, put the originals back in it, and then the amp got stolen in Roxbury a few years later..
In the 90's I picked up an old Ampeg B12 that had a West speaker in it - I think it was a relabeled SRO. _________________ --carl

I was visiting Mike Zaite, Dr. Z, on Tuesday, and the talk turned to speakers. Doc said the SROs were the gold standard that everybody else tried to emulate. _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

I had a Twin, and replaced stock speakers with two 12" SROs. With Les Paul or similar 6-string it was too clean, and too loud in most rooms.

I never used it for steel guitar before it was stolen in 1976. My back still aches. |

had a pair of them in the older Boogie Theile cabs ....I went thru so many speakers trying them out and was always swapping gear and speakers and such ...A friend was hot for my speakers and made me an offere I couldn't refuse, so off they went ...... Looking back they were the best sounding speakers I have ever played thru ...and NO I could care less how much they weigh ...Too bad I had to find out after going thru so many speakers .....Jim |

I have a 15" SRO with the 'whizzer' cone which never used. Any one use these with the whizzer? The whizzer cone in mine is damaged and I might just cut it off and try the speaker without it. |

How bad is the whizzer? Maybe try with the whizzer first? _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

it's bent in or crumpled on one side. Maybe the whizzer itself could be repaired by gluing another whizzer on the inside. |
