I got a call Monday from the band I was, suppose, to just sing with tomorrow night. They asked me to join the band permanently, splitting the singing, and playing dobro. I got the set list Tuesday. I'm good with everything on the list, except, Elvira. Not one of my favorite songs to begin with, but line dances are a must. I've been playing along with a recording, but I'm coming up blank with what to do. This is, oh, so, not a dobro song, IMO. Everything I've come up with is so lame. Any suggestions for fills, rythm, and I'm leaving the solo up to the lead guitarist, but what to do for back up?
Oh, btw, I'm getting paid! My first "paying" gig! Miracles happen!!! Help! Please! I want to keep getting paid! lol
...and, ha, I suppose Elvira is better than Achy Breaky Heart? |

Play the melody. Whenever you're stuck for a solo, play the melody. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

When met with "non-Dobro" songs -- rock, or repetitive, single-line songs -- what works for me quite often is to come up with a riff that I can play with minor variations throughout, or to work around, say, a descending bass line. |

Thanks, you guys. All things considered, the gig went really well. It turns out the lead guitar player didn't care for the song either, and told me, "It's all yours." I don't know how, or wat I did, but I pullled it off.
The whole thing was a blast. Thanks again. |
