Keep your eye out for non-pedal steel console guitars made by people known for pedal steels. I owned a nice Excel D8 for a while and currently have a great non-pedal PedalMaster D10. I've seen GFI, Sho-Bud made some "Jerry Byrd" D8's, etc. Even a malfunctioning or mechanically-gaaked pedal steel can be cleaned out and used that way.

Also, there's plenty of vintage Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker, National, and Magnatone examples on the market. Check out this beauty:

Righteous! I was closely considering that listing for myself a month or so ago, but I decided I've got enough strings to keep me busy for a while. I just love how the vintage market for lovely "big three" instruments is so down-to-earth compared to armpit guitars.

There are lots of great builders out there but while you can still consistently get gorgeous vintage instruments for the same price as (or less) than a brand new one, it's a no brainer for me at least.
