Well, he's good, but I didn't hear him do anything that I don't think Brent Mason could do just as well. I think he and Doug Jernigan could pretty much play tit for tat. Now how many others? I'll let others speak to that, I have a few in mind.

I like Country and Rock'n'Roll, but I have a problem with this. I never really liked the Workingman's Blues/ Guitar Man ryhthm.

Johnny's one of the best chicken pickers out there, no doubt. And don't get the idea that he doesn't have taste - go watch him play up-close sometime, seriously. He routinely comes to guitar shows and hangs out and plays - he's a nice guy and a great player. And I saw him down on Broadway in Nashville once - he just loves to play.

But there are some steel players that can 'keep up' with the fast guitar chicken pickers. But really, it's all apples and oranges, and it's not a contest. Serious musicians on different and even the same instrument and style each bring something different and interesting to the table.

I saw Johnny and Doug playing together at Layla's last year on Broadway early one afternoon and it was exceptional. There were Maybe 10 people in the place all the time I was there. The people on the street had no idea what they were missing.

After seeing steelers walk out on Curly Chalker at the I.S.G.C., I began to formulate an opinion...and that was that we'd probably have a lot more hot steelers if there wasn't this animosity towards them for not playing simple country stuff. Oh Well

I play and gig on both instruments regularly.
The "Level of Difficulty" for Guitar, is much lower than it is for Steel.

I agree with Donnie. I was at St louis one year when Gene O'Neal got a big ovation when he played a stock slow country tune. Then he followed it with a really innovative piece called Funky Monkey and the place went sour on him cuz it wasn't country. Guys sitting ahead of me intoned: "I don't know what THAT is but it sure isn't country". A very creative song full of now sound possibilities for the pedal steel but it didn't fit the mold (hehe, get it , mold). Anyhow if a few of the hot new kid pickers on YouTube took up the pedal steel they would be smoking hot.

I don't get that remark, Tom? Do you even understand what I said? Look, the slow, schmaltzy/whiny stuff is fine. But, so is the fast stuff, even blisteringly fast, provided you've got the chops and taste to pull it off. Oh sure, I love to hear Hughey, Day, and Drake play those crying licks - but I also like to hear guys like Paul, Curly, Doug, Tommy, and Buddy burnin' up the strings. Mr. Green
