Hello all,
Does anyone know a source for the metal "thumbwheel" style knob for the blend pot of a Fender Stringmaster? I've done several google searches for knob manufactures and have drawn a blank.
I have had call for several of them in the last year or so. A popular pickup manufacturer would also like to buy some. I would consider having them custom made if the demand is high enough and there is no exising source.
I have seen this knob used in another application possibly non musical and can not for the life of me remember where.
Please post if you know who may make them or if you would have interest in buying a few if I had a run of 100/200 or so built from bar stock.
Thanks,
Rich |

I had made some years ago in the metalshop. I still have a few in aluminum to sell.

Aren't they made for a splined shaft? That would make them a bit difficult to reproduce the bore. I guess a set-screw would work, but wouldn't fit all that good.
The last one I worked on had splined shaft pots. |

Yes Bill, splined shaft. It's just a matter of running the correct broach through the hole to produce the female splines.
If I had a lathe and a press I could turn them out fairly easily. You would chuck up the round stock, knerl it, drill the center hole, then cut them out like slices of bolagna. Cut the splines in the center hole then it off to the plater for finish. Nickel or chrome I would guess. It might also be a good idea to tumble deburr them before plating. |

I didn't pay attention to the spline, if it was the coarse or the fine type. I guess that since it's aluminum, a broach could be made for the job without too much trouble. The lathe work, like you said Rich, would be simple enough. |

I was doing a google search for these knobs and this old thread came up. I am restoring a deluxe 6 and could use one. Still have any, Ron? Ever get any made, Rich? |

You beat me to it - it seems to be about the only spare part for a Stringmaster that is still made.
Not sure I'd bother to replace it though as it's easy enough to turn the shaft with your fingers (for me, its a set and forget thing) and it's hidden by the bridge cover anyway.
Now, if we can just persuade Armadillo Guitar to start making tuner pans, control plates and nuts we're sorted! |

very easy to make from a nickel coin. Drill an undersized hole and file some notches around the edge. |

I see the one from Armadillo doesn't have a splined center hole. |
