As I work to reduce wight in my rig (because it so much easier than reducing weight in my midriff), I am contemplating trading out my beloved '69 or '70 Professional for a similar era Sho Bud 6139 or Pro 1. Hard to believe I am even thinking of this: I love this axe! But I have two D-10 Sho Buds (the other is an '81 Super Pro) and I would like a S-10 to avoid hauling that weight to gigs where I won't possibly use the C6th neck. I'm just not making enough money gigging these days to imagine saving enough to buy another steel outright, so I could only do this by selling or trading my professional. This raises several questions that I am hoping the collected Sho Bud wisdom can address.
1) Does a roundfront 6139 or Pro I weigh substantially less than a D-10 roundfront? From what I can gather, it does. Also, I would probably still use split fiberboard cases from Dan Bentley, so the differential in the body alone would be directly realized.
2) Is there a noticeable difference in weight between the rack and barrel and the 2-hole puller systems? I'm guessing not.
3) Do the S-10 roundfronts tend to match the D-10s for tone? My Professional has the best tone of the dozen or so steels I've owned. I am guessing this is really a hit-or-miss/case-by-case equation.
Thanks in advance for any feedback. |

Hey Dan, I have a '73 6139 with original case. There's no pickup in it right now but you're welcome to come over and give it a test heft. |
