That's worth watching! The cycle of progress and plateau can be frustrating.
I tell people "They say it takes two years on pedal steel to suck. It took me THREE years, but I'm finally there!" But I stay with it because despite it all, it's still FUN. |

That was really good, Andy. It applies to all the other arts as well, like writing.
There were probably times you kind of had to slug through a section at times, tho I could be wrong.
It reminds me of the days that I don't get to it in one form or another is a day gone by that I can't make up.
I found the video inspirational.
And... I was looking for something through old posts and encountered your possible record album favorite, same as mine: Getz/Gilberto.
I think I'd like to approach steel the way Joao Gilberto does piano. It's the height of taste, to me, and the Portugese language....

Yeah, Charlie. For me that record transcends instruments and reaches me on every level. A drummer friend of mine refers to the roots rock groove he loves as "ear cocaine". I kinda understand that when I think about the impact Getz/Gilberto had on me at about age 20.

I remember the effect at about 18; it was immediate, the space within the recording.
Perhaps the 'cleanest' recording I'd heard to date, and the effect remains the same.
It's enough to make me keep my phonograph; one wants to hear the audible silence, not the digitized absence.
And the drumming... and bass.... The actual bossa nova, reduced to its original components, way below expectation, is a wonderful thing,
and remains my very favorite groove (altho there are so many).

Torn is way under the radar but very respected in the pro musical community. He also plays lap steel. Thanks to Brad Bechtel's page ....
