I have been using Jeff Newman's numbers for tuning for 25 years. 436.5 for G#'s and 438.5 for A's etc. I recently looked on the Internet and Jeff has changed his numbers. Anybody have a reason why?

Ron...
I have often found it hard to tune by the numbers.
I tune at 441. And ony the E's on the 9th side.
The rest of the neck I tune by ear, Or temper tune if you prefer. Trying to tune each string IMHO to a specific number just drives me crazy . Let your ears do the walking. I believe you will have a lot more fun. Now on the C6 . I tune the C's to 441 and my E's a little sharp. The rest temper tune by ear.

Ron,

I believe Jeff did tune off a base 440 reference, originally. Then, as many of us have discovered, cabinet drop tends to make us play sharp of the frets. So Jeff changed it to a base 442.5 reference. But I do believe it is the same shift (from the base) for all the other notes pretty much.

In other words, IF you move everything up 2.5 HZ respectively, it is the same. Example: G#'s at 439 instead of 436.5.

There is no difference whether one chooses to use a tuner or one's ear, if the string ends up the same pitch. And once a tuner setup is programmed for that, it is usually faster than using one's ear, particularly in noisy situations.
