I have a real nice S12 Sho-Bud in absolutely great condition and have been offered a D10 Magnum as a trade, what would you do?

Personally, I like D10's. But that's a real nice Bud. Do you want to learn C6?

Hi Richard I played D10s for over 30 years and can play C6th but age and bad back made it harder and harder to hump a lump and the Magnum is not that heavy but don`t like the way looks and it does not souund as good to my ears as my Bub,what value is my But against the Magnum?

Just to add all four of the knee cowls have been replaced with solid ones, and I have never had a bell crank break in all the years I have played Sho-Buds with the Super Pro system.

They're gonna be ROUGHLY equal (within a few hundred pounds).
A good deal is one in which both sides are happy.
If weight is your main concern, I'd get a set of split cases made for the Bud.

With your Bud only having 3 pedals, I assume it's an extended E9, not a universal. My deciding factor is whether I wanted to play C6, You can also get split cases for the Magnum. From what I have seen here, Magnums are pretty good guitars, so I wouldn't be concerned about quality. They were made by Carter.

If you have a Magnum and perhaps replace the pickups with Alumitones you would have a lightweight, solid, great playing, great sounding guitar. I have a black D10 Magnum with Alumitones and thru a Vegas 400 and DD3 delay it sounds super and plays like a dream. This setup stays at Church and I would not consider selling the Magnum. Looks is a matter of opinion. Many expensive sport cars have powdercoat instead of chrome. However, it appears you are pretty much in the Shobud business with all those parts and it is a great looking guitar. I have never played a 12 string so it would be strange for me but I think you are the best person to make the decision as to whether or not trade. I happen to be a fan of the Magnum guitar. Emmons and Zum also!

I know. It's a tough decision. If the Bud Had the Super-Pro (pot metal) undercarriage, I would be more likely to trade it. It all depends whether I want to get into C6.

I understand that is might be an even swap. Upgrading the Bud to a Uni would be pricey. But probably worth it.

Just to say I do have most parts to put another two pedals and could make it into a 5x4 Universal I just need 2 narrow pedals and 2 more knee levers..

Go for it! A Classic? Compared to a newer guitar? It must sound fantastic!

It does John and it`s all original except for the new knee cowls and I still have the old ones and they are fine and a few more solid knee cowls for spares.

Jimmy,
I would never trade this guitar! A green S-12 Shobud? I might update it, but it would be mine forever!

It has a wood neck. I'm still mourning my replacement of my '76 3/4 wood neck ProI. IMHO, the wood neck Bud's have a most wonderful sound. Traded it in the late '80's for a metal neck 8/4 ProIII to learn C6. I'm playing my Carter D10 now, but I'd love to have another ProI for gigs where I don't need a C6 neck. btw, I took a few seminars from Jeff Newman on playing C6 style on an E9 neck. Don't sell it - you'll regret it.

That is a pretty bud with killer tone I suspect. But magnums are no slouches in the tone department either. Great mordern guitar with rock solid mechanics. If keeping both is not an option that you should pick based on what you like to play the most of. Old school country or combo of genres. Second. Play them side by side and compare the tone and playability.
Than you should be able to make up your own mind.
Personally I would want to keep both but dont tell your wife I said she may want to shoot both of us 😊😊.
