I kind of started a commotion a while back on the Cube 80X. I tried one and didn't like the the way it sounded but the rest of you guys loved and were purchasing the 80XL. Whether or not there was a difference I never found out. I'm really thinking hard on ordering the Cube 80GX. I like the way it's layed out and if it sounds like my Micro Cube on "Black Panel" I'll be happier than hell!! Anyone using this amp? Loren.

Loren, If you like your Micro cube, I see no reason why you wouldn't love the 80GX. I have both, and really like them for different applications. The 80GX will pretty much do everything, while the Micro Cube is limited due to the size and power. I used to have a Cube 80XL and sold it in a weak moment to a friend, but the GX is lighter, sounds the same, and is great for using tracks. It doesn't have the extension speaker jack that the XL had. [I also have a 500 watt Carvin amp head that I use into one or two 15" cabs.]

What I'm looking for is the exact sound that I'm hearing out of the Micro just on a more powerful level. George can you say they sound the same? I never liked the 80X but again everyone was buying and using the the XL. I also love the reverb in the Micro!! George, I just might have to order one and find out for myself. Thanks for the input. Loren.

They may not sound identical. One has a 5" speaker, the other a 12" speaker designed to handle 80 watts. I occasionally play pedal steel, or lap steel at our Church, and the Cube 80GX sounds fine with either one. However, I do prefer a Wet reverb pedal rather than the built in reverb. If I'm using the Micro cube in the house or back yard with a lap steel I just use the onboard reverb. As you said, better to try one out if you can return it if you're not satisfied with it. My friend uses the 80XL for 6 string and pedal steel. I use the 80GX for pedal steel and lap steel. Using either the JC clean, [my preference] or the black face, you should be able to dial in a sound that you like.

I sit here and practice and play with things out of that Micro and I keep saying to myself, why can't I find that same, similar sound or timbre in another amp. It's so comfortable!! I don't play loud anyway. I've used the Micro for recording direct to CD and I'm amazed at what the hell it will pull off!! If I record, I will use "JC Clean", and practicing live I always use "Black Panel". I guess the one main point that never seems to get brought up is finding that sound that fits your style. That's why we're always looking, right? Winking If I could find what I'm hearing on a bigger level, I wouldn't need to look for anything else!! I'm getting closer to ordering! Loren.

Loren, If you don't need the power that the 80GX puts out, you might also consider the 40GX. When I compared the 40XL and 80XL side by side in my home a couple of years ago, they both sounded identical. They both have almost the same eq., [the 40 doesn't have a presence knob], but the 40 is surprisingly loud and has a very good tone with it's 10" speaker. I chose the 80 watt thinking it would probably be safer in a fairly large hall with 300 people. If I was only using a cube for lap steel, the 40 watt would be fine. Of coarse either one can be miked too. There are others here on the Forum that can talk about good results with their Cube 40s.

Hi George...what do you recon makes the GX a little lighter?
I have two 80XL's but I only use one linked to a 15" Black widow 1501 in a Nashville 400 cab. Good full sound Very Happy

Hi Micky, I think they may be using a "Neo" speaker now, but I'm not sure. Also, the cab is a hair smaller and doesn't have the hooks on the back. [The power cord is detachable.] The actual box of the cab is probably the same, but they may be measuring the space the hooks take on the XL. On the 80GX, the corner protectors are a little more compact too. The extension speaker jack is a nice feature on the XL.
