On E9, I'm planning to add the d to c# change on the 9th string. I don't see at as being that useful other than resolving from a 4 to a 1 chord, and that you get the partial ninth chord with the B pedal. There must be more than I'm aware of for sure. I know it appears in the majority of copedants and it's a must-have change for so many players.

I'm wondering if there is something else that's been figured out to replace the 9th string change to something else? I use the second string changes quite a bit, but I would survive if even those went away!

I have 5 levers, the other two besides the d, e, and f are b-Bb on 5 and G# to to F# on 6.

Just looking for knowledge and want to say Howdy!

I've posted this a lot and it will take some effort to go through the sound files but here's a lot of uses for the D to C# change on the 9th string. Some of them are based on getting a nice 4 string m7 chord and goes nicely with the major 7th obtained on the same strings with pedal 2,3 engaged.

Check out tab 957 on this page for a great riff that uses the 9th string:

I've tabbed out a lot more uses for the 9th strings half tone lower. I think it really opens up the 9th tuning to more chords and more sounds.

Question: do you have a raise on the 1st string from F# to either G or G#? That's a pretty common one that's usually on the same lever as the 6th string lower (or for some folks, the 7th string raise). If I only had the funds to make one change to the copedent, I would personally prioritize that 1st string change to G# over the 9th string lower, and add it to the lever I suggested (rather than adding it the 2nd string lower lever).

That 9th string lower to C# you're suggesting would be the second thing I would add, and then you would have pretty much all of the most common E9 changes. And in answer to your question, no, I don't know of any better potential note than C# to change to on that string. The 9th string change is certainly useful at times (see Greg's links), but honestly, I don't hear it used that often and it's probably the least-used change for a lot of people. Still, anyone could benefit from having it -- for it's cool 'resolving note' possibilities, if nothing else. When you need it, you need it!

For me, it's extremely important as, in conjunction with my A&B pedals it gives me my A6 lap steel tuning on strings 4-9. Got me out of trouble on more than one occasion!!!!

I'm probably in the minority though using it for that.

Gary, that D-C# change on string 9 is also useful for a nice 2m-57 movement.

Strike strings 6-8-9D together, then slide up 2 frets while releasing the D lever.

It's a very rich-sounding move, I use it a lot in ballads etc.
