I know these pickups pretty well, have owned and installed several,, I have NEVER run into this problem, and could use some help... As we know, on these pickups for basic humbucker you solder the white wire[hot] to the + lug on the female jack.
Black and bare go to female jack - lug...
Red and green go together.. Basic humbucker..
For single coil you solder the red and green to a spst switch, and the other lug of the switch to ground.. This gives you a single coil..
OK. We are all familiar with that .. its basic...
What I do is isolate both coils using a SPDT on-off-on switch.. I hook up the red and green to the center off lug on the switch.. Humbucker.. On the two end [on] lugs I solder one wire to - and get single coil, and the other lug I solder a wire to +, and this gives me the other coil by itself.. Problem I am having is this.. In the humbucking mode, the coil are out of phase with one another.. The pickup IS in humbucking mode, but is so thin, bright and weak, its unusable.. I understand that in a single coil mode, the direction of current flow, CW or counter CW, makes no difference.. Add another coil and the current must be in phase.. This is NOT...However, you must remember, when that switch is in the center position, it might as well not even be there.. Its just Black and Bare to- White to + hot and red and greed tied together..
I wonder if somehow the wires on this are a different color codes.. any help???... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

btw, I KNOW there are dozen threads about these pickups, but I have been trhough 4 of these things, and have NEVER seen the coils out of phase when in humbucker mode... I am lost at this point, unless some of these had a black hot wire or something... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Have you put an ohmmeter on the two coils?
I bet one is either shorted or open. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

yes, thats the first thing i checked.... I get 10 K on either coil, and 20 K in bucker mode.. I guess I will just keep switching wires around. its clear the 2 humbucking coils are out of phase.. I have heard the sound of out of phase coils a hundredtimes, and this is it.. Thin, hollow, weak and trebly... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Ok, found the problem.. The red wire on this particular unit was the same as the white on others for whatever reason.. I hooked the red to hot, and the green and white together, and using a SPDT switch, I get either coil by itself, and a big fat humbucker in the center "off" position.. Don't know why I had problems with this 705, the others were a piece of cake..bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Bob, is this a reissue 705 (black surrounds) or original 705 (chrome surrounds)? These two threads deal with the reissue
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=2394932
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=244060
which is red = hot, wire green/white together and lifted/insulated, black/bare-shield = ground. That may be different for some of the original 705s.
I have to say that I honestly like 705s, and most humbuckers in general, wired for regular series-humbucking and parallel-humbucking. The parallel-humbucking does have the wider sensing window, but the sound is different owing to the lower impedance due to the parallel connection. This is especially due to the fact that the inductive reactance is cut in half if both coils have the same impedance, just like resistance. IMO, the increased inductance of the series-connected coils is what tends to take the sparkle out of humbucking pickups. Of course, the narrower sensing window of, let's say, a Strat/Tele piciup or for pedal steel, those great old Sho Bud pickups, plays a role. But the parallel connection kinda' gives you your cake (humbucking) and lets you eat it too (less mud).
Of course, Bruce Derr's diagram in the first link gives you all the useful options. |
