Howdy friends, does anyone know what BMI threads their 1\8in. changer finger pull rods at. I think it's 8/32 but I'm not sure. Tenn. Lee

Well, if they use nylon nuts, it doesn't matter. The nuts are smoothbore, and the rods cut threads the first time

oops....yes 5-40 is correct....#6 worked fine for me crappy threads 'n all

Lee, if it's 1/8" rod then a #5-40 would be the proper size thread for that diameter.
All of my 1/8" rods are threaded #5-40.

| Yes, the 5-40 is the proper size for 1/8" rod. You can thread it to a #6 (either 6-32 or 6-40), but it will wind up being a crappy thread because the major diameter is undersize. |

Michael, I have used 5-40 dies on .109 rod and it seems to work real well. What size die would you use on .109 rod??? Thanks, Martin.

If you do the math here between the Theoretical Sharp Minor Diameter and the next smaller Major diameter and divide by 2 to get an actual thread depth, you find that you will have an average thread depth of about .0005"-.0031". The biggest difference being running a #6-40 die on an 1/8" rod. The depth of the thread is the equivalent of the thickness of a human hair (avg. .004"). It should be about .007"-.010" roughly, on these thread sizes based on the means of the tolerance bands.
Like Ross said, the thread is crappy as it's basically just scratches on the surface of the rod but may be enough to hold the nylon nut but would never hold a regular hex nut of the same size.
Also, The #6-40 is a Fine Class Thread and the #5-40 is a Coarse Class. Fine threads are shallower than the coarse in the same diameter.
Martin, you're doing the same thing as Ross, just scratching the surface enough to hold a force fit nylon nut. There really is no bite to those threads. Both of you may be compensating by clamping the die tighter if they are split dies, thereby decreasing the minor diameter to where the thread functions for this application but really is an undersized thread per standard spec.
Well class, that wraps up our thread lesson for the evening. There'll be a test next Thursday. I'll be grading on a curve...

Wow, I was cutting it 8/32 no wonder it wasn,t going that deep. BMI's rods are 0.124 thousands of an inch in diam. Isn't that about an 1/8 of an inch? Can I get a Irwin hex die in 5/40 from Home Depot? I seem to recall mike saying that Mullen threaded their rods 5/40 also. I guess it's a standard in the steel guitar industry T.L.

I purchased mine through ebay - if you are getting a split die, also make sure you purchase an appropriate handle/holder to go with it.
Also, I believe you can make the purchase online via. the Home Depot website.

| I got some 1/8" dia. aluminium welding rods and threaded them 6/32. It was so soft I could do it by hand. Turning the die with my hand. Obviously not deep enough. Sort of works. In a pinch........... |
